What to Expect During a Gynecological Consultation
Q: Can I skip questions I don’t want to answer?
A: It’s okay to leave questions blank if you don’t want to answer them. However, knowing your sexual history can help doctors assess the need for STI or cervical cancer screenings and determine the appropriate size for instruments like the speculum. If you leave certain questions unanswered, it may make the examination more difficult, so it’s recommended to discuss any concerns with the gynecologist during the consultation.
Q: Are questions about sexual partners based on the assumption that they are of the opposite sex?
A: Unfortunately, many medical facilities in Japan still structure intake forms and consultations around opposite-sex relationships. However, there is growing awareness and a shift toward respecting diverse sexual orientations, so improvements are gradually being made.
What to Know About Internal Exams
Q: What is an internal exam, and how does it work?
A: An internal exam involves using a speculum to examine the vagina and discharge, as well as using ultrasound to check the uterus and ovaries.
Q: Is an internal exam painful?
A: The level of discomfort varies for each person. While some feel only minor discomfort, others experience pain and may even feel faint. Those who have not had sexual intercourse may find the exam more painful, so in some cases, it’s avoided. You can note any concerns about pain on the intake form to inform your gynecologist in advance.
Q: What should I wear?
A: Since you will need to remove your lower clothing (pants and underwear) for an internal exam, it’s best to wear clothing and shoes that are easy to remove.
Q: Do I need to groom the area?
A: There’s no need to groom the pubic area before an exam. Whether or not to remove hair is entirely up to you, and there’s no need to feel embarrassed if you haven’t done so.
Q: Should I wash my vagina beforehand?
A: Please do not wash the vagina beforehand, as it can affect STI testing or other cultures. It’s best to come as you are.
Q: Is it okay to use the restroom before the exam?
A: Yes, it’s actually easier to conduct the exam if you empty your bladder beforehand, so please feel free to use the restroom.
