Characteristics of Menstrual Migraines

Headaches occurring around the menstrual period are known as "menstrual-related migraines." These migraines typically start just before or after menstruation and tend to be longer-lasting and more intense than usual migraines.

Symptoms include a "throbbing, pulsating pain" or a "pounding sensation that worsens with movement," usually appearing as menstruation begins or ends. Since these migraines occur during hormonal fluctuations, estrogen, a type of female hormone, is thought to play a significant role.

The Connection Between Estrogen and Headaches

Estrogen, one of the primary female hormones, is also known as an ovarian hormone. During the menstrual cycle, estrogen levels are at their lowest during menstruation, gradually increasing towards ovulation but briefly dipping just before ovulation.

When estrogen levels decrease, serotonin in the brain also decreases. Serotonin has functions like controlling blood vessel constriction and reducing pain sensitivity. So, as serotonin declines, sensitivity to pain increases, leading to a higher likelihood of headaches.

This connection between estrogen and serotonin is why many women experience migraines just before or after menstruation.

What to Do When You Experience Migraines

  • Warm Up Your Body

Try a warm bath to relax your muscles, which can help improve blood circulation.

  • Move Your Muscles

Moving the muscles around your neck and shoulders can be effective as well. Incorporate light stretching or strength exercises into your daily routine to help relieve tension.

  • Take Pain Relievers

Pain relievers can be effective, but if you find yourself taking them more than 15 days a month, you may be at risk for "medication overuse headaches." For chronic headaches that require regular painkillers, consider visiting a hospital experienced in treating medication overuse headaches.
