Understanding Fever Caused by Basal Body Temperature Increase
Nov 12, 2024
What is Basal Body Temperature?
Basal body temperature (BBT) is the body’s temperature at rest, when only the minimum energy required for vital functions is consumed. It can be thought of as the body’s temperature while sleeping.
Generally, BBT changes in sync with the menstrual cycle. After menstruation, BBT remains low but transitions to a high phase after ovulation. Following ovulation, as the follicle becomes the corpus luteum, progesterone (luteal hormone) secretion causes body temperature to stay elevated. This high BBT phase lasts for nearly two weeks, or until just before the next period, with BBT staying around 0.3–0.6°C higher.
Types of Discomfort During Elevated BBT
Some may experience fatigue or discomfort before menstruation, often occurring during the high BBT phase. During this time, increased drowsiness and fatigue are common.
While the luteal hormone elevates BBT, it also limits daily fluctuations in body temperature. Normally, body temperature varies throughout the day, typically lowering during sleep for deeper rest. However, during the luteal phase, BBT remains high even during sleep, resulting in less temperature fluctuation and poorer sleep quality. This can lead to shallow sleep at night, leaving individuals feeling tired and drowsy during the day.
What to Do If Fever Develops
- Rest and Sleep Well
Rest and sleep help boost immunity, so make sure to get plenty of quality rest.
- Keep Warm and Hydrated
Keep your body warm and stay hydrated with room temperature or warm drinks, avoiding very cold fluids. Foods that contain ginger, green onions, and vitamin C can also help. Ginger and green onions not only warm the body but also have antibacterial and sweating effects, potentially aiding in quicker fever reduction.
- Take an Antipyretic
If the fever is uncomfortable, using an over-the-counter antipyretic may help. Rest and take it easy afterward.
Note: This approach is effective if the cause of the fever is known, and a doctor has advised rest. Lowering a fever without understanding its cause can sometimes worsen symptoms, so if the cause is unknown, consult a doctor.
